Interview d'Arnaud "The Game" Lepont

Depuis son installation en Thaïlande il y a 11 mois, les heureux événements et les bonnes nouvelles s’enchainent. Avec un 2ème combat en cage au Dare FC (Dans le cadre du tournoi a 1 Million de $ ) dans quelques semaines, nous rencontrons Arnaud en pleine préparation, interview réalisé par Eric un membre d'ikusa.


IKUSA : Peux tu nous rappeler ton palmarès ?

Arnaud : Bonjour, j’ai un palmarès de 8-1-0 en MMA et 3-1-0 en Muay Thai. Je retourne d’ailleurs sur Phuket le mois prochain pour un combat au Bengla Stadium, en attendant mon prochain combat au DareFC.


IKUSA : Comment as-tu atterri en Thaïlande ?

Arnaud : Je faisais depuis plusieurs années des « aller-retours » en Asie. Apres la fin du travail que j’occupais en France, j’ai sauté le pas pour m’installer au Vietnam. J’ai monté ma salle d’entrainement sur Hanoi en m’associant avec des français déjà présents sur le territoire depuis quelques années. Malheureusement mes associés ont eu de gros problèmes avec les autorités locales et ont été prié de quitter le territoire. Je n’avais rien a voir avec leurs histoires mais étant associés le gouvernement Vietnamien n’a pas fait de détail et j’ai été gentiment prié de quitter le pays dans les plus brefs délais. J’ai tout laissé derrière moi et perdu tous les investissements déjà réalisés. Ceux que j’appelait ma famille m’on tourné le dos. J’ai beaucoup souffert et j’étais perdu.
Je suis donc parti m’installer à Bangkok en Thaïlande. De la, je suis reparti de zéro. Heureusement, j’ai rencontré les bonnes personnes, celles qui ont cru en moi. Elles m’ont évité de finir dans la rue. J’ai reprit l’entrainement comme jamais et je me suis promis de ne pas lâcher prise.
Apres 6 mois pour revenir au top, j’ai signé avec DareFC pour plusieurs combats.


IKUSA : Comment est arrivé ce fameux premier combat au DareFC ?

Arnaud : Des rumeurs circulaient dans les camps d'entrainement de Bangkok qu’un promoteur sérieux cherchait à organiser le premier évènement de MMA en cage de l’histoire de la Thaïlande. J’ai tout fait pour faire partie de l’aventure.
L’organisateur recherchait un combattant étranger pour affronter le champion de l’équipe de Malaysie de Muay Thai (30 combats Pro pour 22 KO) qui avait faillit créer la surprise face a Ole Laursen lors du Martial Combat a Singapour.
J’ai accepté le combat. C’était un peu « Do or Die ». Je ne pouvais pas perdre ce combat. Cette victoire était la plus importante de ma vie.
Maintenant, je me bats pour ma famille, pour ceux qui ne m’ont jamais tourné le dos et qui sont resté avec moi dans les moments difficiles.
Celui qui rentre dans la cage face à moi est celui qui cherche à retirer la nourriture de la bouche de mon fils (Arnaud sera papa dans quelques semaines).


IKUSA : Ceux qui te suivent sur Facebook on suivi ta préparation pour descendre de catégorie mais finalement le combat n’a pas eu lieu, que s’est il passé ?

Arnaud : Je suis un petit 170lbs. Mes adversaires sont toujours disproportionnés par rapport a moi. Comme dirait Sinik, parfois ça fait un peu « Lebanner contre Passepartout ». J’avais donc pris la décision de descendre à 155lbs et tenter ma chance dans cette nouvelle division.
Si j’arrivais à descendre dans cette catégorie, j’étais enfin dans un bon rapport Allonge-Puissance.
Un nouveau combat s’est offert a moi à 170lbs. Une grosse opportunité, face a un vétéran du TUF (The Ultimate Fighter, le reality show de l’UFC) J’ai donc commencé a reprendre du poids pour pouvoir faire ce combat. Malheureusement, les négociations s’enlisent car mon adversaire est très gourmand. Je me retrouve donc a évoluer à 165lbs. Il a donc des chances pour me voir dans un Superfight en catchweight à 165lbs en attendant la décision du promoteur et mon retour au Tournoi à 170.


IKUSA : Le DARE FC fait beaucoup parler de lui avec le fameux prix à 1M$, que penses-tu de l’organisation ?

Arnaud : En mettant de côté le Japon, en Asie, deux organisations ont le potentiel pour devenir l’UFC asiatique (et on comprend d’ailleurs pourquoi l’UFC décide de revenir en Asie). On retrouve le OneFC et le DareFC, respectivement à Singapour et à Bangkok. Je pense que le DareFC a
un management plus efficace et voit sur le long terme. Le Dare a fait l’incroyable annonce du prix un 1 million de $, ce qui fait une somme astronomique en Asie. Gageons que le niveau des combattants impliqués va monter et j’ai déjà entendu des rumeurs sur les combattants qui vont
rejoindre le tournoi. Le niveau va vraiment valoir le PPV !


IKUSA : comment se passe ta préparation pour ton prochain combat ? connais-tu ton adversaire ?

Arnaud : Je m’entraine deux fois par jour, et 5 jours par semaine. Le samedi, juste un seul entrainement. Le matin, Musculation ou cardio et en journée, Muay Thai ou MMA. Je roule ma bosse entre plusieurs camps. Q23, 13Coins, Jiti-Gym, Phuket Top Team… J’ai la chance de pouvoir avoir des sparrings excellents en Muay Thai et en MMA.
Big Up a mon pote Vaughan Lee, qui fait ses débuts à l’UFC 138 (Leben vs Munoz) en Angleterre.
Mon prochain adversaire du tournoi a 1M$ n’est pas encore désigné mais j’aimerai affronter le vainqueur du combat Haja vs Swensson. Le vainqueur de ce combat sera un sérieux client.
Un membre d’un camp très réputé en Thaïande a eu des mots déplacer à mon encontre et annonce que je ne tiendrai pas 2 rounds face a lui. J’ai donc demandé que ce combat soit mis en place par l’organisation avec qui je suis en contrat. J’ai déjà commencé à remonter de catégorie
pour faire ce combat. Sans trop de surprise, cet individu a demandé une somme astronomique. J’espère à titre personnel que les négociations vont aboutir. (Je ne mentionne pas son nom car je ne souhaite pas lui faire de publicité)


IKUSA : la scène MMA en Thaïland bouge beaucoup dernièrement (cf la création par Mike Swick et Roger Hueta d’une salle à Phuket), que penses-tu du niveau général ?

Arnaud : C’est vrai que j’ai la chance de pouvoir bouger beaucoup en Thaïlande. J’ai été invité au Tiger Muay Thai Camp et je serai encore au Phuket Top Team pour profiter de Roger Huerta comme sparring dès la semaine prochaine. La qualité de vie, le sourire des locaux (et la
beauté des femmes, soyons honnête) fait venir beaucoup de combattants pro. C’est une chance que je ne laisse pas passer. Le niveau est assez disparate. C’est pourquoi j’ai choisi d’aller dans des camps spécialisé, Q23 pour le Jujitsu, JitiGym pour le MuayThai et pour faire la transition
entre ces deux disciplines, 13Coins et Phuket Top Team.
Par contre, il faut être réaliste, le Muay Thai étant le sport nationale, le niveau est juste excellent. J’ai appris l’humilité et j’en avais besoin. J’avais un ego démesure et repartir de zéro dans des camps Thai est la meilleure chose qui me soit arrivé. Se faire mettre a l’amende par un Thaï de 10kg de moins qui habite dans une hutte en bamboo remet les idées en place et les pieds sur terre.


IKUSA : on voit encore très peu de combattants asiatiques à l’UFC, quel est ton avis là-dessus ?

Arnaud : Tout d’abord on voit que l’UFC commence à recruter de plus en plus de combattants Japonnais. Le problème c’est que le peuple japonais se renferme sur lui-même. Il est rare de voir des combattants japonais évoluer dans les camps de Thaïlande. En revanche, l’Asie s’ouvre au MMA très rapidement. Il est d’ailleurs fréquent de voir la diffusion en live de l’UFC dans les bars de Bangkok. Je pense très sincèrement que nous verrons bientôt de nouveaux talents dans les 2/3 ans a venir. Malaisie, Thaïlande : il y a de vrais potentiels.


IKUSA : un petit mot pour les fans français et tes partenaires ?

Arnaud : Juste dire a ceux qui ne retournent pas leurs vestes dans la victoire ou la défaite, que je les toujours dans mon cœur. Aux fans Français qui me suivent malgré la distance, je combattrai toujours pour vous les gars, l’argent ne me rend pas le bonheur de vos encouragements et soutien. Since moving to Thailand 11 months ago, the happy events and the good news keep coming. With a 2nd cage fight with Dare FC (Under the $1M tournament) in a few weeks, we meet Arnaud in full swing.

Us: Can you remember your record?

Arnaud: Hello, I have a record of 8-1-0 and 3-1-0 in MMA Muay Thai. I return to Phuket next month for a fight in the Bangla Stadium, and waiting for my next fight in DareFC.

Us: How did you landed in Thailand?

Arnaud: I was for several years of "round trips" in Asia. After the end of the job I held in France, I have taken the plunge to settle in Vietnam. I started my training room in Hanoi by joining with some French people I knew already in the country in recent years. Unfortunately my associates have had big problems with local authorities and were asked to leave. I had nothing to do with their stories, but just being associated with, the Vietnamese government has not made any detail and I was politely asked to leave the country within the shortest possible time. I left everything behind me and lost all the investments already made. Those I call my family very promptly turned away. I suffered a lot and I was lost.
So I went to Bangkok, Thailand. From there, I started from almost nothing. Fortunately, I met the right people, those who believed in me. They prevented me from ending up in the street. I started training like never before and I promised not to let go. After 6 months to return to the top, I signed with DareFC for several fights.

How came this famous first fight with DareFC?

Arnaud:
Rumors circulated in the training camps of Bangkok a promoter seriously tought to organize the first event of MMA in a cage in the history of Thailand. I did everything to be part of the adventure.
The promoter was looking for a foreign fighter to face the champion of Muay Thai Team of Malaysia that had almost upset Ole Laursen (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter / Ole-Laursen-15394) during a Martial Combat event in Singapore.
I accepted the fight. It was a little "Do or Die." I could not lose this fight. The win was the most important of my life.
Now, I am fighting for my family, for those who never turned their back on me and stayed with me in difficult times. Whoever enters the cage in front of me is one that seeks to remove the food from the mouth of my son.



Those who follow you on Facebook are tracking down your preparation, but eventually the fight did not happen, what has happened?

Arnaud: I am a small 170lbs. My opponents are always disproportionate to me. My friend Sinik, sometimes says it's a little "Lebanner Vs Passepartout" (Quote of the song : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqkvDjPQHe0 ) So I made the decision to get off at 155lbs and try my luck in this new division. If I could get in this class, my opponent could not handle my striking power.
A new fight was offered me has at 170lbs. A big opportunity, facing a TUF veteran (The Ultimate Fighter, the UFC reality show) so I started gaining weight in order to make this fight. Unfortunately, negotiations bogged down because my opponent is very greedy. It is therefore likely to see me in a catchweight fight at 165lbs. It is a pending decision of the promoter but I will return to the tournament at 170.

The DARE FC has a lot of attention with the famous $ 1 million price, what do you think of the organization?

Arnaud:
Leaving aside Japan, in Asia, two organizations have the potential to become the UFC of Asian (and we understand why the UFC decided to return to Asia). We find the OneFC and DareFC respectively in Singapore and Bangkok. I think the DareFC a more effective management and sees the long term. The Dare made the announcement of the incredible $ 1 million price tournament, wich is a lot of money in Asia. Let us hope that the level of the fighters involved will go up and I've heard rumors about the fighters who will join the tournament. The level is really worth the PPV!

Us: How is your preparation for your next fight? Do you know your opponent?

Arnaud: I train twice a day, five days a week. On Saturday, just one workout. In the morning cardio and weight training or during the day, Muay Thai or MMA. I roll my hump between several camps : Q23, 13Coins, Jiti-Gym, Phuket Top Team ... I am fortunate to have excellent sparring in Muay Thai and MMA.
Big up to my friend Lee Vaughan (http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Vaughan-Lee-6946), which will made its debut at UFC 138 (Leben vs. Munoz) in England.
My next opponent of the $ 1 million tournament is not yet designated but I'd like to face the winner of the fight between Haja vs Swensson. The winner of this fight will be a major opponent.

A member of a renowned camp in Thaïland had really bad and disrespect words against me and announced that I will not last two rounds in front of him. I asked the organization with whom I am in agreement to put this fight on the line. I have already started back to prepare this fight. Not surprisingly, that individual has requested an astronomical sum. I think it's an excuse. I let him talk, i move forward.



the MMA scene in Thailand moves a lot lately (see the creation of Mike Swick and Roger Huet ‘s gym in Phuket), what do you think about the general level?

Arnaud: It's true that I have the chance to move a lot in Thailand. I was invited to Tiger Muay Thai Camp and I am still in Phuket Top Team to take advantage of Roger Huerta as a sparring next week. Quality of life, the smile of the native people (and the beauty of women, let's be honest) brought a lot of pro fighters. It's a chance that I will not let pass. The level is quite disparate. That's why I chose to go to specialized camps. Q23 for Jujitsu, JitiGym for MuayThai and to make the transition between these two disciplines : 13Coins & Phuket Top Team.
We must be realistic, Muay Thai is the national sport, the level is just excellent. I learned humility and I needed it. I had too much ego and start from scratch in Thai camps is the best thing that ever happened to me. To be beatten by a Thai of 60kg who lives in a bamboo hut's had made me understand the true word of Respect and humility.

we still see very few Asian fighters in the UFC, what is your opinion on that?

Arnaud: First we see that the UFC is beginning to recruit more and more Japanese fighters. The problem is that the Japanese people withdraw into himself. It is rare to see Japanese fighters operate in the camps in Thailand. However, MMA in Asia opens very quickly. It is also common to see the live broadcast of UFC in the bars of Bangkok. I sincerely believe that we will soon see new talent in the 2 / 3 years. Malaysia, Thailand: there are real potential.
